Admission Requirement

 

The Teacher Education Center enrolls more than 680 students each year who choose from two teacher preparation programs with different content area. Both undergraduate (sophomore and above) and graduate students from all departments within the University may apply to the Center at the end of each school year. Applicants are required to take the Personal Traits Assessment, and the following two tests:

1. General Educational Knowledge Test

2. Chinese Literacy Test

  

 

 

Applicants, who pass the tests, must complete at least 26 credits in pedagogy, and 45 credits in content area in above 2 full academic years, and followed by six months teaching practicum.

   

Course Overview  

I. Teacher Preparation Program of Secondary Education Prerequisites and Requirements

a. General Education Requirements: 14 semester hours total

1. Educational Foundation Courses: minimum of 2 courses/4 semester hours (includes Introduction to Education, Educational Psychology, Educational Sociology, Philosophy of Education).

2. Educational Methodology Courses: minimum of 3 courses/6 semester hours (includes Principles of introduction, Principles and Practice in Guidance and Counseling, Curriculum Development and Design, Instructional Media and Implementation, Classroom Management, Educational Measurement and Evaluation)

3. Teaching Practices and Internship Courses: 4 semester hours

(Teaching Methods and Materials, individually assigned based on major/or department)

 

b. Additional elective credits: 12 semester hours total

 (Educational Administration, Gender Education, School Administration, Secondary Education etc.)

 

 

 

II. Teacher Preparation Program of Special Education (Gifted education) Prerequisites and Requirements

a. General Education Requirements: 10 semester hours total

1. Educational Foundation Courses: minimum of 2 courses/4 semester hours (includes Introduction to Education, Educational Psychology, Educational Sociology, Philosophy of Education).

2. Educational Methodology Courses: minimum of 3 courses/6 semester hours (includes Principles of introduction, Principles and Practice in Guidance and Counseling, Curriculum Development and Design, Instructional Media and Implementation, Classroom Management, Educational Measurement and Evaluation)

b. Special Education Requirements: at least 40 semester hours total

1. Core Courses: 10 semester hours total (includes Introduction to Special Education, Assessment for Special students, and Internship for Special students)

2. Gifted Education Courses: 12 semester hours total (includes Introduction to Gifted Education, Teaching Method for Gifted Students, Creativity Education, Guidance and Counseling for Gifted Students, Special Topics for Gifted Education)

3. Additional elective credits for Gifted Education: 8 semester hours total

 (includes Management of Resource Classroom, Special Educational Administration and Regularity, Multiple Intelligence Theory, Leadership, Independent Study etc.)

  Certification 

 The Center issued a Pre-service Teaching Certificate after they have completed the general courses, domain-specific courses (content area), professional education courses and half-year practicum. A Teaching Certificate is further granted by the Ministry of Education if students also pass the Teacher Certification Exam.
